A National Institutes of Health (NIH) study found that between 37-40% of breast cancer is found through self-detection depending on the age of the patient. In patients over age 70, self-detection accounted for 39% of diagnoses, in patients age 50-69 self-detection accounted for 37% of all diagnoses, and in patients younger than age 50, self-detection accounted for 40% of all diagnoses.

A breast self exam should be done every month. Changes in breast appearance or feel are the most obvious signs of potential breast cancer. Look for a breast lump or thickening of the skin; a nipple that looks flattened or turned inward; changes in the color of the breast skin and texture of the skin, including peeling, scaling, crusting or flaking; and changes in the size, shape or appearance of the breast.

If you notice any of these signs make an appointment with your doctor right away. Do not wait for your next mammogram to see a doctor.
